Not many know this fact but the clothing industry is a heavy user of resources as well as a heavy polluter. This consumer industry’s nature encourages people to buy and then discard clothing based on changing trends and fashion rather than using products based on their durability, keeping in mind the environmental impact of such constant discarding. Due to the huge amount of wastage and disposal, recycling plays an important role in the fashion industry. Environmental fashion, organic fashion, and recycled fabrics are current alternatives adopted by various parts of the world in terms of environmental sustainability and balance.
It’s amusing to know that used PET bottles can be recycled and used to produce high-grade fiber. Let us give you some information about it.
The polyester textile has named its green version “Recycled Polyester”. Recycled polyester uses PET as the raw material which is the same that is used in clear plastic water bottles. It is recycled to create the fabric which prevents it from going to landfills.
Compared to normal polyester, the conversion of PET into recycled polyester requires approximately 33-53% less energy.
The steps involved in the conversion process are as follows:
-Initially, the used PET bottles are collected and these PET bottles are then sterilized, dried and crushed into small chips.
-The chips are further heated and passed through a spinneret to form strings of yarn.
-In the next step of the process, this yarn is wound up on spools.
-The fiber is then passed through a crimping machine to get a fluffy texture.
-This yarn is then baled, dyed and knitted into polyester fabric.
This process has some fruitful benefits as follows:
-Usage of recycled polyester leads to a reduced dependence on petroleum as the raw material for our fabric needs.
-Using PET bottles for this process reduces landfill thereby causing less soil contamination, and reduction air and water pollution.
-The garments created from recycled polyester can be recycled multiple times without getting degraded in terms of quality, thus aiding in minimizing wastage.
There is a growing demand for recycled fabrics across the globe, especially in Europe because of its Eco-friendly and skin friendly properties.
As per reports, India produces 500,000 tonnes of pet waste every year and an increase in use of pet bottles in daily consumption, will also increase the amount of waste to grow by leaps and bounds. Thus, recycling has a much better scope and future if taken care of in a proper way.
