Difference between Microfiber and Polyester

Confused about which fabric to use for certain chores and designs? Microfiber and polyester might be two of the most popular fabrics that you would feel hard-pressed to choose between. Let’s understand the key differences between the two to clarify their use.

Microfiber and polyester are both very extensively used fabrics. To understand how the two differ, we will look at various aspects.

1) History

Microfibers: Production of ultra-fine fibres (less than a denier) dates to the late 1950s, using melt-blown spinning and flash spinning techniques.

Polyester: The research on polyester fibres started around 1926 and in 1928 polyester was patented in Britain by the International General Electric Company.

2) Production

Microfibers are typically polyester and nylon blends. The fibres are processed to be broken down into strands as small as 1/100th of the diameter of human hair.

Polyester after the first stage of polymer production in the melt phase, the product stream is divided into two different application areas.

3) Types

Microfibers can be of many types as per production, features and application, like flat-weave, split-weave, micro-modal, prolen, etc.

Polyester is divided mainly into two main categories: textile applications and packaging applications. It is the process of manufacturing the fabric that gives it a name, such as ATY, DTY, POY, and so on.

4) Durability

Microfiber is not as durable as polyester. As the fibres are very thin, it is soft and has a shorter lifespan than Polyester.

5) Primary use

Microfiber is widely used in making cleaning products because of its scratch-free and dust-grabbing properties and also in pillowcases, bedsheets, and more.

Polyester is primarily used in the textile industry and in the production of pants, t-shirts, shirts, etc.

6) Cost

Microfiber fabric is usually more expensive than polyester because of its production process and properties that polyester does not have.

In conclusion, both fabrics are ideal for particular items and specific applications.
